Paper Town

Description

This artwork I made for my final piece of assessment last year. It was an installation inspired by John Green's novel Paper Towns and on a smaller part Looking for Alaska. The buildings that form the walls of the labyrinth are to create a ‘paper town’ which is a town where everything lacks depth making it superficial and fragile. The labyrinth is the struggle of escaping everything a paper town represents, as you can easily become lost. The string is from a line in Paper Towns with the string being your last hope which you grasp at and also from the Greek myth of the labyrinth where a string guides the path.

The black disk that the labyrinth sits on has a diameter of 170cm and a circumference of 534cm to give you a sense of how big and time consuming it was.
The base was created from an old used canvas with the labyrinth lines drawn on and then cut out. All the 2D 'buildings' were all hand made by me, I cut up cardboard and then took pages from an novel (that I had no use for anymore) and glued them to both sides of the cardboard. Once the building was done I would glue it to the base.
Once it was all set up I created a sound-scape from me saying lines from Paper Towns. It took me about 5-6 weeks (class, home, after and before school) to complete.
